The tamper is an important tool for making espresso. By tamping the grounds tightly, pressure is built up, hot water flows evenly through the coffee grounds and the aromatic oils are released.
The advantage of the Tamping Tom for one are the narrow edge which allows for an even distribution of the grounds in the portafilter and an elimination of small clumps. Furthermore, the wide top of the grip lies comfortably in the palm of your hand and the slightly curved bottom of the tamper uniformly distributes the pressure.
